News for 2012. The group continues to collect artefacts and ephemera for our permanent museum at Gresley Old Hall. If you have any old mining material (maybe there's a coal cutter at the back of the garage) that you would like to donate, please contact us and we'd be glad to collect it. We shall be attending many of the usual local exhibitions and events this year, and we will be attending the Donisthorpe Field Day on 9th June, so see you there.

SAVING OUR MINING HERITAGE
The aim of this blog to showcase the proceedings of the South Derbyshire Mining Preservation Group. The groups aims are to preserve and promote the memory and heritage of the coal mining history of the South Derbyshire and Leicestershire coalfield. Evidence of coal mining in the area have all but vanished, the once ubiquitous colliery headgear have almost gone from the face of the earth, but a wonderful legacy of memories and old artefacts have been collected by the members of the group. In a small but fascinating museum sited at The Old Hall , Gresley, a dedicated band of mainly ex-miners and their wives have gathered together an extensive display of mining history. The artefacts and memorabillia range from safety lamps to pony harness, mines rescue equipment to tallies, and the team are regularly requested to take much of it out to schools to explain to the local children how their Grandfathers earned their daily bread.
I will add more to the site in the coming days, thanks for visiting come back soon and see some interesting stuff.
